Supreme Court Dismisses Bilkis Bano’s Appeal to Review May 2022 Order | News from India

NEW DELHI: the Supreme Court rejected the appeal of Bilkis Bano calling for the revision of his previous order which allowed the Gujarat government to decide the remission requests of 11 lifers convicted of gang murders during the 2002 communal riots.
In his written petition against granting remission, which led to the release of 11 convicts on August 15, Bano said the state government issued a mechanical order in complete disregard of the legal requirements set by the Supreme Court.
Gujarat remitted their sentences as they had served more than 14 years in prison and released them. The decision to release them after condoning their sentences is being challenged in Apex Court by activist Subhashini Ali and others, as well as Bilkis.

The petition stated that mass convictions are not permissible and, moreover, such relief cannot be requested or granted in right without examining each convict’s case individually according to his particular facts and the role they played in the offence.
