He shoots, he scores… again. Lionel Messi has taken the helm of the most liked Instagram post of all time, with a picture of him lifting the World Cup.
Winning the gold trophy just wasn’t enough for the Argentina star, after his side beat France in a historic World Cup final on Sunday.
His subsequent post on the social media platform received over 61 million likes, surpassing the previous record holder – an infamous image of an egg which had 56.6 million likes.
The Instagram World Record Egg is now filled with fans cracking jokes and celebrating another Messi victory.
One user commented ‘Messi cooks an egg omelet’, while another said: ‘King has passed him.
In Messi’s record-breaking message, the footballing legend is seen embracing his victory, smiling in glory, as he lifts the trophy above his head.
The caption read: “WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!! So many times I dreamed of it, so much I wanted it that I still didn’t fall off, I can’t believe it.”

The jokes continued on Twitter over Messi’s triumph over the egg.
“Okay Messi FC we beat the egg, now what?” tweeted one person with a doctored image.
Argentina’s World Cup victory went down in history as one of the greatest of all time, with the team being greeted on their return home by scenes of wild jubilation.
