NEW DELHI: Returning to top class cricket after almost three years, Suryakumar Yadav fired an 80-ball 90 against Hyderabad on the opening day of Group B Ranji Trophy game at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. Captain Ajinkya Rahane and Yashasvi Jaiswal also hit tons as Mumbai came in at 396 for three by the end of the game.
Surya, who is the No. 1 batter in the T20I, approached the national red ball game with the same fearlessness and intensity as his shot included 15 fours and a six.
The stylish hitter has time and again expressed his desire to play Test cricket for India. He last played a first-class game in February 2020.
Jaiswal continued his rich vein of form with a sublime 162 on 195 balls while Rahane battered on 139 at the stumps.
Prithvi Shaw was out for 19 years after Hyderabad opted to play at BKC.
Shorey hits 8th ton first class to lead Delhi recovery
Fly-half Dhruv Shorey hit his first-class eighth cent to lead Delhi to 271 for seven on their opening day against Assam.
Assam pulled Shorey’s partner Anuj Rawat early after opting to play first.
Shorey went unbeaten on 139 of 216 balls before bad light forced the early stumps with 81 overs played on the day.
Young Delhi captain Yash Dhull hit 22 from 56 while Vaibhav Rawal hit a precious 43 from 71. Senior hitter Nitish Rana struck out the first fly ball.
Delhi, which lost its tournament opener to Maharashtra, fielded a depleted unit in the absence of injured guards Ishant Sharma and Mayank Yadav. They were forced to field three debutants in Harshit Rana, Pranshu Vijayran and spinner Hrithik Shokeen.
Leading guard Navdeep Saini, who suffered abdominal muscle strain while with the Indian squad in Bangladesh, is unlikely to be fit in time for Delhi’s next game.
