United States: the Taliban release 2 Americans in a “goodwill gesture”

WASHINGTON: The Taliban released two Americans detained in Afghanistan in what appeared to be a “gesture of goodwill”, State Department spokesperson net price said Tuesday.
The release was not part of a larger prisoner exchange and no money changed hands, he told reporters.
A senior administration official said the US government is currently assisting the two men and they will soon be reunited with their families. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Neither Price nor the official identified the two Americans.
The United States does not officially recognize the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan, which seized power from a US-backed government after US forces withdrew in 2021.
