Nikhat Zareen, Manju Rani storm into quarters at Women’s National Boxing Championships | Boxing News


NEW DELHI: Nikhat, medalist at the world championships Zareen and Manju Rani continued their good race during the 6th National Women’s Boxing Championships as they recorded landslide 5-0 wins in their respective bouts to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament in Bhopal on Thursday.
Reigning world champion Nikhat, representing Telangana, defeated Eva Waynie Marbaniang of Meghalaya in the 50kg pre-quarter-final bout, while Manju Rani of Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) who won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships, also came up with an equally dominant performance to defeat Uttarakhand’s Kavita overall in the 48kg last 16 contest.
Meanwhile, another RSPB boxer, Jyoti Gulia, the 2017 world junior champion, also advanced to the last 8 of 52kg after defeating Jharkhand’s Neha Tantubai by unanimous decision.
Chandigarh’s Simran (48kg) and M Dhivya of Tamil Nadu (54kg) were among other boxers to emerge victorious and advance to the quarter-finals on day three of the competition, where 302 boxers competed across 12 weight classes.
While Simran beat A Ritu Rao of Odisha by the referee stops the contest verdict, Dhivya got the better of Muni Leya of Arunachal Pradesh by 5-0.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) from Assam will play her round of 16 on Friday, while the quarter-finals will take place on Saturday.
