Fire in unregistered Russian nursing home kills 20 | world news

Twenty people have died after a fire at an unregistered nursing home in Siberia.

The fire broke out on Friday in a two-storey wooden building of the private retirement home in the city of Kemerovo, according to Russian news agency Tass.

The report quotes fire safety officials as saying that the entire second floor was engulfed in fire.

The flames were brought under control shortly thereafter.

“At the site of the fire, rescuers continue to work through the rubble under low air temperature conditions,” the report said.

“According to the latest data, 20 people died.”

A criminal investigation has been opened into the possibility that the fire was caused by negligence.

Kuzbass Governor Sergey Tsivilev said all similar institutions, especially private ones, would be inspected in the coming week.
