Christmas Eve shooting in British pub leaves 1 dead and 3 injured

A Christmas Eve shooting at a pub in north-west England has killed a young woman and injured three men, police said on Sunday.
the Merseyside Police The force said it was investigating the 11.50pm shooting on Saturday at the Lighthouse pub in the town of Wallasey like a murder case. The police did not arrest any suspects.
“This investigation is still in its early stages and we understand that this is a truly shocking and devastating incident which took place just before Christmas Day in a busy venue full of young people,” said Detective Superintendent David McCaughrean.
The woman died in hospital “with an injury consistent with a gunshot wound,” police said in a statement. In addition to the three injured men, several people were injured, the statement said.
Investigators were looking for witnesses as well as cellphone video and CCTV footage to figure out what happened, McCaughrean said.
“We believe the shooter left the pub car park in a dark colored vehicle, possibly a mercedes shortly after the shooting, and we want anyone who saw it to contact us immediately,” he said.
The minister of a nearby church told Britain’s Press Association news agency that the shooting would come as a shock to local residents because of the location of the pub.
“We have a lot of young people, families in this area. The lighthouse is at the center of this community”, Jeffrey Hughesminister of the United Reformed Church, said.
Hughes said his church’s Christmas morning service would not be “as much of a celebration as it was going to be” because of the upsetting news.
The violence “shows us that even though we celebrate Christmas, we are still very far from those ideals (of peace) as a society,” he told PA.
Gun violence is relatively rare in Britain, where most police do not carry arms.
A fatal shooting at a pub in the east of England on Friday night led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man, Essex Police have said.
The suspect has been charged with murder, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and possession of a bladed item in a public place following the death of another man at the Lamb and Lion pub in Westcliff- on-Sea, police said.
