NFL star Damar Hamlin in critical condition after Bills-Bengals game

Former NFL player and CNN reporter Coy Wire expressed shock after Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills collapsed during Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“There does not appear to have been a direct hit to the head or neck. His head didn’t even look like it had been jostled that much. So I can’t guess what kind of injury it might be,” Wire told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday.

Hamlin fell to his back on the field moments after getting up from an open field tackle by Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

Wire, who played nine seasons in the NFL and is currently a CNN sportscaster, said the collapse was shocking.

“Never seen a one-shot response like this,” he said.

Visibly emotional, Wire noted that sympathy should be sent to Hamlin’s family and loved ones.

“I’m trying to keep my cool for you guys because I think it’s important that we send prayers, think of Damar, think of his family,” Wire told Cooper.

Wire also praised the NFL’s decision to suspend the game after Hamlin’s collapse.

“I’m so proud that the NFL suspended the game because I think maybe 10 years ago it might not have happened,” he said. “The emphasis on player safety these days, they’ve stopped the game. I think that’s progress.
