NEW DELHI: Khumukcham, one of India’s star weightlifters and two-time Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold medalist Sanjita Chanufailed the doping test for an anabolic steroid drostanolone, and was provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), YOU learned on Friday.
Manipur’s Sanjita was tested in competition by NADA’s Doping Control Officers (DCOs) during the Gujarat National Games held in September-October last year. His urine sample came back positive for drostanolone. She was provisionally suspended from the date of her sample collection.

Sanjita holds the CWG record for lifting 84 kg in the snatch event in the 53 kg weight class. She had previously been suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in May 2018 after testing positive for testosterone. But she was cleared doping charges in 2020 after the IWF admitted to “mixing up” its sample numbers due to an administrative error. No explanation was offered by the IWF for the irregularities in the analysis of Sanjita’s sample.
Drostanolone has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at all times under the category of “anabolic agents” in section S1 of the WADA list.
According to the US-based National Library of Medicine (NLM), drostanolone “was medically used in the treatment of breast cancer and, additionally, is often used in sports, bodybuilding and weightlifting as a performance enhancer , while increasing protein synthesis, which is reflected in the gain of lean muscle mass tissue and facilitates recovery”.
The anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) made news recently when ADDP imposed a four-year ban and Rs 50,000 fine on Mumbai-based athletic trainer Mickey Menezes for injecting a substance banned its trainee Kirti Bhoite, who is serving a two-year ban.
