NEW DELHI: The BCCI Apex Council will decide on its association with shirt sponsor Byju’s in addition to deliberating on Star’s “media rights payment” at its emergent meeting on Monday.
The meeting will be held virtually.
Byju’s wants to end its agreement with BCCI but at the meeting held last month, the board of directors had asked the edtech major to continue at least until March 2023.
The company had recently announced its intention to lay off a maximum of 5% of its total workforce of 50,000 people.
In June last year, Byju’s extended its jersey sponsorship deal with BCCI until November 2023 for an estimated $35 million.
The brand had replaced Oppo in 2019. Byju’s was also one of the sponsors of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
“Payment of stars’ media rights”
There is only one item on the agenda of the meeting and it reads “discussion on the payment of media rights for Byju and STAR”.
Please note that Star is the current media rights holder for indian locustis home season. The rights will be renewed after March.
Last year, BCCI sold the IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle for a whopping Rs 48,390 crore.
