Delayed debut made me hungrier: Suryakumar Yadav | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Suryakumar Yadav was 30 when he made his international debut against England in March 2021. It was quite a wait but he continued to score in domestic cricket and didn’t stop scoring knock on the door of the breeders.
Popularly known as SKY among his teammates and fans, Surya says the wait has made him even more eager to succeed, as he showed with his third Century T20I in less than a year during the India’s 91-run victory over Sri Lanka in the third T20I on Saturday at Rajkot.
Surya smashed a blistering 51 ball 112 not out in India’s dominating victory which also won the hosts the T20I three-game series 2-1.
โ€œIt makes me even hungrier (sic) now,โ€ Surya told Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid, during an interaction hosted by BCCI.tv, when asked if the long Waiting had taught him to value his success much more.

“I mean the amount of domestic cricket I’ve played, I’ve always loved playing that for my Mumbai State side and I’m still trying to put on a show.
“I also liked batting even there (domestic cricket). Yeah, it was a bit difficult the last few years, but I kept telling myself that’s why you play this game, (so) enjoy it. The passion for this game drove me to drive, so I kept going.”

Since his ODI and T20I debut in 2021, Surya has played 16 ODIs and 45 T20Is for India, scoring 384 runs (average 32.00) and 1578 runs (average 46.41) respectively.

The middle-order hitter’s century on Saturday was his third in T20I in just seven months, making him the first player in game history to score three hundred T20Is when not opening the bat.
“It’s actually hard for me to pick an inning…I’ve enjoyed hitting in every tough situation I’ve gone to bat. I’ve just had fun, whatever I’ve done in the last year. I did the same. thing again.
“As I’ve also said before, I just try to have fun and express myself as much as possible. In these tough situations, teams try to get the game done. I try to take the game into my own hands. If it works out well for me and the team, I’m happy,” Surya said.

So how many strokes of his bat are predetermined? head coach Dravid asked the player 360 degrees.
“I mean obviously in this format you have to be a bit predetermined, and at the same time you also have to have another shot if the bowler is ahead of you during that time. But yeah, I try to play the field in which outfielders are in, which bowler can bowl at that time and it works.โ€
“…I set myself the pitch whenever a left arm spinner or a leg spinner or a fast bowler bowls and I just try to time the ball as much as possible.”
