IND vs SL: It felt like Sri Lanka against Suryakumar Yadav, says Hardik Pandya | Cricket News

RAJKOT: Unleashing another masterpiece, Suryakumar Yadav has once again shown why he is the No.1 T20I batsman in the world, demolishing Sri Lanka in third and defrosting T20I in SCA Stadium here with a fabulous 112 not just 51 balls, in a blazing shot that had up to 9 sixes. These were the rounds that completely bludgeoned the Lankans and mainly contributed to their 91-point loss to India, who won the T20I series 2-1.
Obviously, when you have the luxury of an explosive batsman like Suryakumar Yadav in your ranks, who can tear through any bowling attack of his day, life can be easy for a captain.

“Today was like Sri Lanka v Surya. So it makes my life easier. That’s why I always mentioned that someone like Surya is so important to us in cricket at white balls, because the way he changes (the game) the way he plays some of those shots, he actually breaks the morale of the pitcher, it kind of helps the other batsmen too,” the Indian skipper of T20I Hardik Pandya said after the game. “Overall, Surya and Rahul Tripathi (smashed 35 out of just 16 balls) were great,” he added.

In the locker room, what does he say to a player like Surya before he goes out to bat? “You don’t tell him. You see, the kind form Surya plays in, the kind of clarity he has, you don’t have to go talk to him. He’s always very clear about his plans, and that’s why he’s successful in this format. He doesn’t doubt his ability. Whenever he has a double mind, he always comes (to me) We talk. It’s just about giving that little bit of clarity…it’s about…you know, get out there and enjoy, which he does. I don’t think anyone has to say anything to him,” Pandya explained.
“I think it was a brilliant round. Our bowlers tried a few shots which obviously didn’t work. This round took the game away (from us). Suryakumar was hitting 200 (strike rate) and he held (his SR) until he got his hundred. It is therefore a special skill that he has acquired. I think he took the game from us with his batting skills today,” praised Sri Lanka’s batting coach Naveed Nawaz.

Navaz believes this helps batsmen like Surya practice for hours and days on some unorthodox shots in the net, before trying them out in the middle. “It’s about answering the questions that bowlers ask you. Bowlers these days come out with very different things like slower balls, wide Yorkers. So, as a hitter, you have different answers to these questions. So they go out in practices and try to get answers to the various questions the bowlers ask them. They train in different ways,” he said.
What helps a batsman like him become more deadly is his ability to play unorthodox shots like the scoop and sweep up fast bowlers with ridiculous ease. “I think it’s about pushing the boundaries these days. A lot of things that cricketers do today, if we were doing this 10, 15 or 20 years ago… players were told we couldn’t do that, we couldn’t do that. But nowadays, with T20 cricket, players are pushing the boundaries. Players find ways to score points, some with orthodox methods and some with unorthodox methods. On the whole, they succeeded in doing so. It’s about finding a way and also pushing the limits as hitters,” said Nawaz, who coached Bangladesh to the Under-19 World Cup crown in February 2020.
