A superstar NFL player invests in the other side of football – for the second time.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is joining the Kansas City current ownership group of the NWSL, the team announced Tuesday. Mahomes’ wife Brittany co-founded the team alongside Chris and Angie Long in December 2020.
Mahomes said in a statement, “I am grateful to have the opportunity to join my wife on the Kansas City Current ownership team.”
The Super Bowl LIV MVP added, “Brittany and the Longs have done an amazing job building a world-class organization. I am delighted to join another Championship-caliber club as they continue to make history.
Mahomes, 27, won the 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player award en route to Super Bowl glory when the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.
He already co-owns the Kansas City Royals franchise in Major League Baseball and Sporting Kansas City, the city’s Major League Soccer team.
“We are thrilled to make this a family affair and welcome Patrick as owner,” said Brittany Mahomes. “He was a big supporter behind the scenes. His passion for the current is undeniable and I’m glad he’s with us as we continue our journey to becoming the best in the NWSL.
Mahomes becomes the first active NFL player to own an interest in an NWSL franchise.
“Patrick is obviously a once-in-a-generation athlete and someone who has had an immeasurable impact on the Kansas City community,” Chris and Angie Long said. “Working with Brittany has been a blessing. We are delighted to now partner with Patrick as well.
