Kyiv was rocked by several powerful explosions on Saturday morning, with officials in the Ukrainian capital reporting a missile attack on critical infrastructure.
“There is an attack on the capital,” the Kyiv City Military Administration said on Saturday.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the strikes took place on the eastern side of the city, where several power stations are located.
“Explosions in the Dniprovski district. All services go to the scene. Stay in the shelters! Klitschko said on Telegram.
He added that debris from an incoming missile fell on a non-residential area on the western shore of the city (Holosiivskyi district) of the capital. “There were no casualties,” Klitschko said.
The exact locations of the explosions could not be immediately verified by CNN. Heavy fog covers much of the city.
Kyiv region military administration chief Oleksiy Kuleba said explosions were heard around 6 a.m. local time on Saturday.
“A fire broke out in a critical infrastructure. Intervention teams are on site. So far, no casualties have been reported,” Kuleba wrote.
Two other Ukrainian cities also reported explosions early Saturday.
Explosions were also heard in Zaporizhzhia in the southeast and Kharkiv in the northeast, officials said.
“The enemy attacks Zaporizhzhia again. No detailed information about explosions or casualties yet,” Zaporizhzhia city council secretary Anatolii Kurtev wrote on Telegram.
In northeastern Ukraine, the head of Kharkiv’s military administration has urged residents to take shelter.
“Attention, residents of the city and the region of Kharkiv. Stay safe. The occupants strike again! Oleh Synehubov wrote on Telegram.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said Russia fired four S-300 missiles, two of which hit the city.
However, Oleksandr Pavliuk, a Ukrainian army commander based in kyiv, said the explosions in Kyiv were not caused by Russian attacks.
“The explosions are not related to air threat or air defense or any military action,” Pavliuk wrote on Telegram.
“If there had been a threat, you would have heard the alarm. The cause of the explosions will be reported separately.
