Ishan Kishan is strong contender for Test spot in Rishabh Pant’s absence: Mohammad Azharuddin | Cricket News

ABU DHABI: Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin believes Ichan Kishan would be a solid option as a wicketkeeper hitter in the absence of Rishabh Pants for next month’s four-game Test series against Australia.
Ishan received a first call-up to India’s test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from Nagpur on February 9.
Azhar, who makes commentary in the UAE’s T20 International League, said what happened to Pant is very unfortunate, but Ishan’s aggressive striking style makes him a strong contender for the goalkeeper slot. ticket office.

Pant was seriously injured in a car accident the last week of December while traveling from Delhi to Roorkee. He will be sidelined for most of the 2023 season as he recovers from multiple injuries.
“Ichan Kishan was selected to the Indian Test squad on his recent form, I think he will be a stronger candidate for the wicketkeeper batsman option. He’s a left-handed drummer,” Azhar told PTI in an interview.
However, it will not be easy for Ichan to make it into the Test squad’s playing XI due to the presence of KS Bharat.
Bharat has been with the team for almost a year now and has scored three half-centuries in the last four first-class games. It also included a 77 run innings while featuring India A against Bangladesh A.
Kishan couldn’t keep his place in the ODI squad despite a double century against Bangladesh.

Azhar welcomed the decision to pick Ishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the Test squad but was unhappy that the two weren’t chosen for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka.
“When the player is fit, it’s not good to have him on the bench. Suryakumar Yadav has the potential to play for the Indian team in all three formats. He also played well in his last Ranji game,” Azhar said.
“As much as I have seen Suryakumar’s stick, I can say that like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, he too can play in all three formats as well. After a long time, India has such a batsman who can play in all formats.
“It’s very difficult to get a place in the team and these two players will have to prove themselves, if they find a place in the team.”
The former Indian batting player, who led the Indian team in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs, also advocated a separate captaincy for each international cricket format.
