Insecurity among players reason for India’s poor showing in ICC events | Cricket News

DUBAI: Former Indian player Robin Uthappa feels he is leaving Kuldeep Yadav of the second Test against Bangladesh after his eight wickets in the opening match sends the wrong message to the players and makes them insecure.
Uthappa, currently plays for Capitals of Dubai in ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates, believes that such selection decisions are to blame for India’s poor performance in ICC tournaments.
India have not won a World Cup since the 2011 title triumph by the side led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the 50+ world showpiece.
Uthappa, who was part of India’s T20 World Cup winning team in 2007, added that IPL teams like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who have made less changes to their squad over the years. years, have been the most successful teams solely because of this reason.
“Kuldeep was ‘Player of the Match’ in the first test against Bangladesh and he was out of the squad for the next game; that doesn’t send a good message,” said Uthappa, India’s former white-ball specialist , to PTI in an interview.
“Yes, you can explain things to Kuldeep once, but it sends the wrong message to young players that even after you get ‘Player of the Match’, your place in the squad isn’t secure,” he said. -he adds.
Kuldeep took eight wickets in the first Test at Chattogram but was dropped for the Mirpur Test, replaced by Jaydev Unadkatwho returned to India after 12 years.
Uthappa, who played his last two IPLs for CSK and decided to stop there at the end of the 2022 season, said the trend of making “constant changes” within the team meant that players did not feel safe.
“I think there is a lack of security among the players in the team. There have been constant changes in the team for a long time, when a player does not feel safe, he always stays with the team. state of mind to save his place in the team.”
Uthappa, who has won the IPL three times, said: “I think it’s important to give players a sense of security. What we see is that in recent years too much change is happening And in crucial games, their performance goes down because they are not sure of their place in (the) squad for the next game.”
Citing the example of MI and CSK, the two most successful IPL teams having won five and four titles respectively, Uthappa added: “You look at IPL, most of the time these teams won the titles which brought less change. in the playing eleven. . The success of Chennai (Super Kings) and Mumbai (Indians) proves it too.”
Uthappa said he has no regrets about leaving Indian cricket to play in foreign leagues.
“I’m delighted to be playing competitive cricket for the first time in six months. It’s (ILT20) a good tournament. Some of the best players in the world are playing here,” the wicketkeeper said.
“It’s the BCCI rule (Indian players must withdraw from all forms of cricket played in the country and seek a BCCI NOC to play abroad). We don’t make the rules but we have to follow them. I had to make a decision, so I made the decision to retire (from Indian cricket).”
