Jamaica seizes $80 million worth of cocaine in one of its largest drug busts | world news

Jamaican authorities have seized an estimated $80m (£74m) worth of cocaine in one of the country’s largest drug busts.

Officials discovered the cargo hidden inside a freighter at the port of Kingston late Saturday, Jamaican police said.

Police said a search of the cargo ship from South America revealed more than 1,500kg of cocaine, which had been split into 50 bags containing 1,250 packages.

Jamaica has long been used as a hub for transnational criminal organizations to move weapons and drugs, including the shipment of cocaine to North America and Europe.

The Jamaica Defense Force said it will continue to fight criminals who seek to “take advantage of Jamaica’s geostrategic importance in global commerce by exploiting legitimate goods”.

Neither police nor defense forces have named the vessel carrying the cocaine and no arrests have been made.

In October, the global police agency Interpol said Jamaican authorities busted a record 500 kg of cocaine,
worth approximately $20 million, which is expected to be shipped by private jet to Canada.
