Extreme heat halts play at Australian Open | Tennis News

MELBOURNE: Extreme heat forced a stoppage of play on Tuesday’s outdoor courts at the australian openwith the roofs closed on its three main stadiums — Arena Rod Laver, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena.
With players sweltering in temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit), the tournament’s five-game heat stress scale reached five.
The scale measures four climatic factors: radiant heat (strength of the sun), air temperature in the shade, relative humidity and wind speed.
The lowest level reading is one and the highest five is at which point the game hangs.
“This means play continues until an even number of matches are completed or until a tie-break is completed,” organizers tweeted.
“No new matches will be called to court. Play at the outdoor training grounds is also suspended.”
