Alec Baldwin to be charged in fatal ‘Rust’ shooting

Many other actors said they were “always checking their guns or having someone check it in front of them,” New Mexico Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said shortly after announcing plans to indict actor Alec Baldwin and gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez Reed. Manslaughter.

She noted that some of those actors were even “A-list” celebrities.

“Everyone who handles a firearm has a duty to make sure that if they want to handle that gun, point it at someone and pull the trigger, it’s not going to fire a projectile and kill someone,” she said.

“An actor doesn’t get a free pass just because they’re an actor. That’s what’s so important. We say here in New Mexico that everyone is equal before the law,” he said. she adds.

Carmack-Altwies said there were real rounds mixed in with dummy rounds and crews did not regularly check ammunition.

Somehow a live ammunition was loaded into the gun that was given to Baldwin.

“He didn’t check. He didn’t do anything he was supposed to do to make sure he was safe or anyone around him was safe,” Carmack-Altwies said.

Baldwin’s failure to check the gun before firing is key information prosecutors are using to argue he was negligent with the standard of safety, Carmack-Altwies said. Negligence is a big part of the manslaughter charge, according to CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams.

Overall, there was a “lack of safety and security standards on set,” the district attorney said.
