British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined by police for failing to wear his seatbelt while driving a car.

Sunak, who was filming a social media clip at the time of the offence, received a ‘conditional fixed sentence offer’ from Lancashire Police.

A Downing Street spokesman said on Friday that the British leader “will of course comply” with the sanction. “The Prime Minister fully accepts that this was a mistake,” the spokesperson added.

Sunak’s spokesperson previously said on Thursday that Sunak apologized for a “brief lapse in judgement” while filming an Instagram video in the north of England, and urged people to wear their seat belts .

Lancashire Police said: ‘You are aware that a video has circulated on social media showing an individual not wearing a seatbelt while being a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.

“Having considered this matter, we have today (Friday 20 January) issued a conditional offer of a fixed fine to a 42-year-old man from London.”

In the UK, failure to wear a seat belt when available can result in a fine of up to £500 unless you are covered by a valid exception.

This is the second time police have fined Sunak while he is in public office. In August 2022, Sunak, then finance minister, and former prime minister Boris Johnson were fined by police for lockdown-breaking parties held on UK government premises.
