Gymnast Dipa Karmakar handed 21-month ban after failing dope test | More sports News

NEW DELHI: Star Gymnast Dipa Karmakar was handed a 21-month ban for failing a doping test conducted by the International Testing Agency, contrary to claims by Indian officials that her ‘suspension’ last year was unrelated to doping offense.
Karmakar’s drug sample collected out of competition by the ITA, an independent organization that runs the International’s anti-doping program Gymnastic Federation (FIG), contained Higenaminewhich is a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Agency Code.
His ban period will however end on July 10 this year as it was counted from the day (October 11, 2011) the sample was taken.
“The ITA confirms that Dipa Karmakar has been suspended for a period of 21 months, effective July 10, 2023 after testing positive for Higenamine (S3. Beta-2 Agonists as per World Agency Prohibited List Anti-Doping),” the ITA said. in a press release Friday evening.
“The positive sample was collected on behalf of the FIG for out-of-competition testing on October 11, 2021,” he added.
The Swiss-based non-profit organization works under the supervision of WADA and the International Olympic Committee to implement anti-doping programs for various international federations.
The ITA further stated that Karmakar’s doping issue has been resolved through a case resolution agreement pursuant to Article 10.8.2 of the FIG Anti-Doping Rules and an equivalent provision of the WADA.
“The athlete’s results were disqualified as of October 11, 2021.”
Karmakar, who shot to fame after finishing fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the jumping event, has struggled with injuries since undergoing surgery to treat an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2017.
His last FIG event was the 2019 World Cup in Baku.
Karmakar’s ban flies in her face as well as Indian Gymnastics Federation officials who claimed ignorance after she was placed in the ‘suspended’ category by the FIG in February last year.
GFI President Sudhir Mittal said at the time that he had received no communication from the FIG regarding his suspension.
Karmakar herself and her trainer Bisheshwar Nandi remained silent at this time.
Other GFI officials have gone so far as to say that the “suspended” status could be due to other issues, such as ethics or discipline, unrelated to a doping violation.
