A magnitude 7.8 earthquake shakes central Turkey, 10 dead

At least 10 people were killed and 34 buildings collapsed as a earthquake a magnitude 7.8 struck central Turkey on Monday morning, officials said.
This was stated by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). earthquake it struck at a depth of 10km (6 miles) near the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras, while the EMSC’s monitoring service said it was assessing the possibility of a tsunami risk.
The earthquake was followed by another strong jolt. The quake was felt in several provinces in the region and caused several buildings to collapse, according to reports. There were no immediate casualty reports.
According to the US Geological Survey the earthqyuake was centered about 33 kilometers from Gaziantep, a large city and provincial capital. It was about 26 kilometers from the city of Nurdagi.
Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency, AFAD, said the quake was a magnitude 7.4.
Several buildings collapsed in nearby Malatya, Diyarbakir and Malatya provinces, HaberTurk television reported.
The earthquake was also felt in Lebanon and Syria.
In Beirut and Damascus, buildings shook and many people took to the streets in fear.
