In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned India’s first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (IAC I) built in India, which made the country part of an elite group of nations capable of producing aircraft carriers exceeding 40,000 tons.
The Navy had said the aircraft carrier would be able to play a role in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The statement came against the backdrop of China’s growing dominance of the region.
