Plane carrying deceased former Pakistani president arrives in Karachi

A special plane carrying the body of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf from the UAE arrived in Karachi on Monday under tight security conditions, immigration officials said.

His family were also on board when the plane landed at the city’s airport where he will be buried on Tuesday. Musharraf, who died aged 79, seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999 ousting the elected government of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Musharraf died on Sunday in Dubai after a long illness.

During his tenure as president, Musharraf made Pakistan a key ally of Washington in the war on terror following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. This angered militants who at least twice attempted to assassinate him in the city of Rawalpindi in 2003 but escaped unharmed.

Musharraf was forced to step down in 2008 from former President Asif Ali Zardari’s party when his allies lost the parliamentary elections.
