The European Union lawmaker was preparing plans on Monday to host Volodymyr Zelenskyy if the Ukrainian president decides to come to Brussels to attend an EU summit later this week.
Two sources in parliament, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the plans were only intended to prepare the lawmaker to host Zelenskyy if security conditions allow him to attend Thursday’s meeting.
“When it arrived, we would be ready,” said one of the sources, stressing that for security reasons any decision could only come at the last minute.
EU leaders from the 27-nation bloc will gather for Thursday’s summit in Brussels, allowing Zelenskyy to meet all the bloc’s top leaders in one day. Zelenskyy has often only addressed EU summits via video calls from Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has long had an open invitation to come to Brussels if he wishes.
It was unclear whether Zelenskyy would be able to travel as Russian forces hold Ukrainian troops pinned down with attacks in the eastern Donbass region amid concerns that a new Russian offensive may be in the offing.
EU Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kiev on Friday where they told Zelenskyy they had the bloc’s unwavering support in Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
The only trip out of Ukraine Zelensky made was a visit to Washington in December to seek further aid for the war and to thank Ukraine’s major financial and military forces for his support.
