Bacharach was known for his communication skills. He was a frequent visitor to the White House, whether the president was a Republican or a Democrat. In 2012, Barack Obama, who had sung a few seconds of Walk on By during an election appearance, presented Bacharach with the Gershwin Award.
The composer had won eight Grammys and three Oscars. He also received the Broadway award for his composition Promises, Promises. In addition to his singles, he had also composed film scores that include What’s New, Pussycat?, Alfie, and the 1967 James Bond spoof Casino Royale.
Bacharach has been married four times. His married life to his first wife Paula Stewart lasted from 1953 to 1958. He then married Angie Dickinson and their marriage lasted from 1965 to 1980. His marriage to his third wife Sager lasted from 1982 to 1991. He is survived by his fourth wife Jane Hansen, whom he married in 1993, his sons Oliver, Raleigh and Christopher.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Bacharach had moved to New York City. He then met his songwriting partner David. They produced their first hit album Magic Moments in 1958. The two then teamed up with Warwick and produced hit after hit.
Bacharach and David ended their partnership after their musical remake of Lost Horizon failed in 1973. Subsequently, the two eventually reconciled. David died in 2012.
