The death toll from the explosion in an apartment in Siberia rises to 12

Authorities say a gas explosion in an apartment building in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk has killed at least 12 people, including a 2-year-old boy.

Thursday morning’s explosion toppled two entrances to the five-story building, with 30 apartments destroyed in the ensuing fire.

Russian news agencies quoted the city’s emergency services as saying 12 people were killed, nine others were hospitalised, and the fate of three people believed to be in the building were unknown.

Novosibirsk is the largest city in Siberia and the third largest in Russia by population, with about 1.6 million people.
