Henya Federman, 40, had been in critical condition for two months after trying to save her 4-month-old daughter, who drowned in the United States. Federman was flown to the United States for medical treatment but died on Feb. 8, according to the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement website.

Leaders noted that Federman and her husband, Rabbi Asher Federman, had lived on St. Thomas since 2005 and founded the Virgin Islands Chabad Lubavitch.
