Valentine’s Day: “Rain or shine, will you be mine?” Google Doodle celebrates Valentine’s Day

Google, in celebration of Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, showcased a animated doodle celebrating the most romantic day of the year. The doodle, which shows two drops of water separating before joining to form a heart, is titled “Rain or shine, will you be mine?”.
It is said that in the Middle Ages European countries such as England and France believed that February 14th was the start of the mating season for birds. They associated this phenomenon with love, and a little later the romantic celebrations began. The holiday became more popular around the world in the 17th century.
Valentine’s Day, also called Saint ValentineValentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day is thought to have been named in honor of Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman Catholic priest who died on February 14, AD 270. It originated as a Christian holiday in honor of one or two martyrs early Christians named Valentine.
The custom of sending Valentine’s Day gifts developed in early modern England and spread throughout the English-speaking world in the 19th century. Later in the 20th and early 21st century, these spread to other countries.
There are a number of martyrdom stories associated with various Valentines connected with February 14, including an account of Valentine’s captivity of Rome for serving persecuted Christians under the Roman Empire in the third century. According to an ancient tradition, Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his captor. A number of later additions to the legend have connected it better to the theme of love: an 18th-century embellishment of the legend states that he wrote the jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before her execution; another tradition posits that Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry.
