Those who love Tipu Sultan should not stay in this land, says Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel in Yelburga | Bangalore news

KOPPAL: Karnataka BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel he sparked controversy by telling the people of Yelburga in Koppal district that people who sing devotional songs in praise of Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman should stay there, and those who have an affinity with the 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan should not.
Kateel made the comment at a public meeting Tuesday ahead of state assembly elections, which take place in less than three months.
“We are the devotees of Rama and Anjaneya (Hanuman). We are doing the work of Anjaneya. We are not Tipu Sultan’s children. We are the ones who will bring Tipu’s children back home,” Kateel said, citing PTI news agency.
Then he asked the cheering crowd, “I want to ask the people of Yalaburga – do you worship Anjaneya or sing Tipu Sultan’s praise. Won’t you drive away those who sing Tipu’s praise into the forest?”
The BJP leader invoked Anjaneya’s name in Koppal district, which is believed to be ‘Kishkindha Kshetra’, the monkey kingdom mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The place is also believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman in Anjanadri, the hill of Hanuman’s mother Anjana.
“Swear if you want the sons of Tipu or the devotees of Lord Rama and Anjaneya in this state. I am asking you this question in the holy city of Anjaneya that those who love Tipu should not stay in this land. Only those who sing Rama Bhajan (devotional songs ) should stay here,” the BJP leader said.
Kateel accused Congress state chairman DK Shivakumar of having a soft angle for Mangaluru cooker explosion accused Mohammed Shariq, who was injured along with the driver when the alleged cooker bomb he was holding exploded in an auto rickshaw on November 19 last year.
He claimed that when Shariq was arrested, Shivakumar had called the accused innocent and naïve.
Kateel teased the Congress leader that she has an intense love for two stoves – one is the Belagavi stove and another is the Mangaluru stove.
Kateel was referring to the free distribution of kitchens in Belagavi allegedly by a congressional leader aspiring to contest the upcoming assembly elections.
Kateel also mocked courageous Congress leader and former Prime Minister Siddaramaiah by claiming the “mass leader” has not found a constituency to contest the election.
He challenged Siddaramaiah to contest Badami polls, where the Congress leader had won the 2018 assembly election by a slim margin.
“You are a leader who has governed the state for five years. You call yourself the mass leader of Congress. Why doesn’t the mass leader have an electoral college (to contest the election)? You are the mass leader who is groping in the dark without a electoral College?” Kateel tried to know.
