High security number plates are mandatory in India. All vehicles sold before April 2019 must be installed with HSRP. The mandate was introduced with the aim of improving safety and the reduction of car theft.

In a letter to the police chiefs, UP Additional DG (Traffic and Road Safety) Anupam Kulshreshtha said that a separate period has been allotted for the installation of HSRP in different categories of registered vehicles, and today (Feb 15) this prescribed period ends.
Meanwhile, Noida DCP (Traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav said, “The Traffic Department will comply with the direction and from 16 February, a fine of Rs 5,000 for defective number plates will be imposed on all vehicles without HSRP.”
