George Soros is “targeting” India’s democratic system; BJP lashes out at billionaire investor | News from India

NEW DELHI: Billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros has been targeted by the BJP for an alleged attempt to undermine the country’s democratic system. Union Minister and BJP leader Smrit Irani accused Soros of not only targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also Indian democracy.
In a press conference held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Irani lashed out at Soros, calling him a man designated as an economic war criminal and who has expressed a desire to break Indian democracy. He said Soros wants a government that is flexible to his needs in order for his nefarious plans to succeed.
The BJP leader said Soros had created a fund of more than a billion dollars to intervene in democratic systems, including in India, and said he had funded more than a billion dollars to target leaders like Prime Minister Modi.

Soros recently made remarks at the Munich Security Conference, saying the turmoil engulfing business tycoon Gautam Adani’s empire could open the door to a democratic renaissance in India. He noted that Prime Minister Modi had “kept silent” on allegations of fraud and stock manipulation in Adani’s industrial empire, and that the prime minister was “supposed to answer questions” from foreign investors and Parliament on the matter.
Adani Group has come under intense scrutiny since US short seller Hindenburg Research accused the firm of engaging in “blatant stock manipulation and accounting fraud” for decades. The Adani Group has denied all of Hindenburg Research’s allegations. However, Adani Group has lost more than $110 billion in market valuation since the release of the Hindenburg report on Jan. 24.
