Injured David Warner ruled out Border Gavaskar Trophy as problems in Australia grow | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Australia Opener David Warner will return home from India and miss the final two tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy after a broken elbow and concussion, Cricket Australia said on Tuesday.
It’s the second injury in two days for struggling Australia, who are 0-2 down in the four-Test series.
Warner will return home to Sydney to recover but is expected to return to India for the three-match ODI series following the four-match Test series. The ODI series kicks off on 17 March in Mumbai.
“David Warner has been cut from Qantas test tour in India and will be returning home,” CA said in a statement.

“Warner was hit in the elbow in the second test in Delhi and suffered a hairline fracture. Upon further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the test series.
“He is currently expected to return to India for the three One-Day Internationals following the test series.”
Warner has been replaced by Matthew Renshaw in the second innings in the second Test here with delayed concussion symptoms after being hit on the grid of his batting helmet by India fast bowler Mohammad Siraj in Australia’s first innings.
That blow came shortly after Warner had been hit in the arm from another rising birth, with X-rays later confirming the lefty had also suffered a hairline fracture of the elbow.
The 36-year-old had struggled for form throughout the first two Tests, which Australia lost heavily by 0-2 in the series, returning 26 runs from his three completed innings.
Australia coach Andrew McDonald indicated on Monday that a decision on Warner’s fitness would come.
“Warner is still in pain at the moment. We’re in no rush to make any decisions right now around Davey. I’m just seeing how he fits in, how functional he is,” McDonald had said.
Travis headwho came out to bat in Australia’s second innings in place of Warner at New Delhi, is expected to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the third round in Indore starting on March 1st.
Australia have already lost fast bowler Josh Hazlewood (Achilles pain) for the remainder of the campaign, while the other members of the Test squad Mitchell Starc AND Cameron Green they were absent from the first two games of the series while recovering from finger injuries.
Green, however, should be able to play in Indore. He came very close to being selected in the second Test, during which he faced fast bowling into the nets.
Leg spinner Mitchell Swepson he has to return to India and rejoin the team after returning home after the opening test in Nagpur for the birth of his and partner Jess’s first child.
