NEW DELHI: Ministry of Education headed all states and Union Territories to set the minimum age for admission to Class 1 at six, officials said Wednesday.
According to the new National education policy (NEP extension), the core stage consists of five years of learning opportunities for all children (ages 3-8) comprising three years of pre-primary education and then grades 1 and 2.
“The policy therefore promotes the seamless learning and development of children from pre-school to grade 2. This can only be done by ensuring that three years of quality pre-primary education is accessible for all children studying in Anganwadis or government, government aid, private and NGOs – run pre-school centres”, an elder MoE official said.
“The ministry has directed state governments and UT administrations to align their age of admission with policy and provide Class 1 admission at age six and above,” the official added.
