LAC: Litigation LAC: India, China discuss disengagement proposal in remaining friction points | News from India

NEW DELHI: The 26th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) was held in Beijing on Wednesday. This was a first in person WMCC extension meeting since the 14th meeting held in July 2019.

WMCC was established in 2012 to provide a platform for consultations and coordination between India and China on border affairs. The 26th meeting was significant as it took place amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, particularly in the wake of the 2020 clashes in the Galwan Valley.
Undersecretary (East Asia) of the foreign affairs ministry led the Indian delegation on Wednesday. The Chinese delegation was led by the Director General of the Boundary & Oceanic Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two sides have examined the situation along the Actual control line (LAC) in the western sector of the India-China border areas and discussed openly and constructively the disengagement proposals in the remaining areas, which would help restore peace and tranquility along the LAC extension in the western sector and create the conditions for the restoration of normalcy in bilateral relations.
To achieve this goal in accordance with existing bilateral agreements and protocols, they agreed to hold the next (18th) round of the Senior Commanders’ Meeting as soon as possible. The two sides agreed to continue discussions through military and diplomatic channels.
