Ruckus Forces MCD Session Adjourn, Delhi Mayor Says BJP Advisers ‘Tried To Attack’ | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Hours after being elected mayor of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi on Wednesday accused BJP advisers of trying to attack her during the Standing Committee Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.
Oberoi’s accusations came in the middle of a high-octane drama around midnight, when a ruckus erupted between BJP and AAP members inside the MCD house for standing committee member election.
On Twitter, Shelly Oberoi said, “BJP advisers just tried to attack me while I was conducting Standing Committee elections, as per Supreme Court order! This is the extent of BJP Gundagardi they are trying to attack a female mayor “.
In reaction to Oberoi’s tweet, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “This is absolutely shocking and unacceptable!”
Deputy CM Manish Sisodia of Delhi also criticized the BJP over the alleged incident saying, ‘After losing the mayoral and deputy elections, the BJP resorted to hooliganism in the Standing Committee elections. They stopped the election of members of the committee for many hours and now BJP members have attacked the new mayor”.
During the voting, BJP councilor Kamaljeet Sehrawat requested that the councilors not be allowed to carry cell phones and pens when voting. But Mayor Shelly Oberoi said we won’t put pressure on anyone, it will be a matter of dignity, it’s up to the discretion whether to take it or not.
However, after 47 councilors cast their votes, the BJP said some councilors are taking photographs of ballots via their mobile phones, which is a violation of the secret ballot. Amid the turmoil, Mayor Oberoi said mobile phones would not be allowed, but the BJP demanded that all votes cast so far be rejected and the election be rerun.
This further led to an intensification of the ruckus between the two party members, after which the MCD session was adjourned for an hour.
Earlier in the day, Shelly Oberoi was elected as the new mayor of Delhi after polling 150 votes on Wednesday.
“I assure you all that I will run this House in a constitutional manner. I expect you will maintain the dignity of the House and assist in its smooth running,” said Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi as she was elected mayor earlier. in the day.
Calling it a “big responsibility”, the newly elected mayor expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Prime Minister Manish Sisodia. “Today I had the opportunity to serve the people of Delhi.”
“Goondagardi (hooliganism) has been defeated,” Shelly Oberoi targeted the ruling BJP.
“The truth has prevailed. Today it has been proved that the people of Delhi have won. It is not the victory of the AAP. It is a victory of democracy. It is a victory of the people of Delhi,” said Oberoi.
Voting began at 11:30 am after the Supreme Court ruled to conduct the mayoral election of Delhi. The court also ruled that aldermen (appointed councillors) would not have the right to vote.
Later in the day, AAP candidate Aaley Mohammad Iqbal was also elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Delhi.
He managed to defeat BJP candidate Kamal Bagri, winning 147 votes to Bagri’s 116.
The last three attempts to elect the mayor failed due to political bickering between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. They met for the first time on January 6th, the second time on January 24th and the last time on February 6th.
Municipal elections in Delhi were held on 4 December and the results were announced on 7 December. The Aam Aadmi party won 134 seats out of 250.
