NEW DELHI: Just Fountainthe old french soccer awesome, died at the age of 89, his family announced on Wednesday.
Fontaine was the all-time top scorer in a single World Cup with 13 goals.
Fontaine reached the record in 1958 in Sweden where France reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Fontaine scored 30 goals in 21 appearances for France between 1953 and 1960.
In 1958, he helped the Blues reach the semi-finals in Sweden.
A prolific striker with 259 goals in 283 appearances in his club career, Fontaine was one of the key players in the great Stade de Reims side that reached the European Cup final in 1959.
Reims, who won three French top-flight titles with Fontaine, lost 2-0 to Real Madrid but ‘Justo’ finished as the competition’s top scorer with 10 goals.
