Mysterious 30-foot chamber found inside the Great Pyramid of Egypt

Egyptian officials revealed on Thursday the discovery of a mysterious 30-foot-long corridor sealed inside one of the Giza pyramids.

Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa described the find at a press event on Thursday, saying the chamber is thought to be around 4,500 years old. The corridor, which is above the main entrance to the Pyramid of Khufu, is nearly 30 feet long and about 6 feet wide.

The area went unnoticed by archaeologists for hundreds of years and is only now being discovered thanks to modern scanning equipment. Issa credited the international Scan Pyramids Project (SPP) with making the discovery.

Experts still don’t have an explanation for why the corridor was made. Christian Grosse, a professor of non-destructive testing at the Technical University of Munich and a leading member of the SPP, said he hoped the corridor would lead to further discoveries.

“There are two large limestones in the end chamber, and now the question is what is behind these stones and under the chamber,” Grosse said.
