NEW DELHI: Indian pair of Ankita Raina And Prathana Thombare fought hard to record an impressive win from behind to advance to the $40,000 ITF Women’s Open doubles quarter-finals at the KSLTA Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
The No. 2 seeded duo defeated the Indian-German wildcard pair of Sharmada Balu and Sarah Rebecca Sekulic 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 in an intense round of 16 match that lasted almost two o’clock .
The Indo-Swedish third seed of Rutuja Bhosale and Jacqueline Awad also qualified for the quarter-finals after beating Ji Hee Choi (South Korea) and Lee Ya-Hsuan (Taipei) 6-4, 6-2.
The all-Indian pair of Pragathi Narayan and Prathiba Narayan, meanwhile, exited in the quarter-finals after a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Anastasia Kovaleva and Hanna Vinahradava.
A similar fate was reserved for another pair of Vaidehi Chaudhari And Shrivalli Rashmikaa which gave the whimsical duo of Slovenian Dalilia Jakupovic, former world number 38, and France’s Amandine Hesse a tough fight before losing 6-7 (5), 7-5, 5-10.
Meanwhile, in the first round of singles, Japan’s Ikumi Yamazaki upset third seed Sakura Hosogi 5-7, 3-6. The daughter of Bengaluru Sharmada, a wild card entrant, however, lost to No. 8 seed Eden Silva of Great Britain 2-6, 4-6.
