They had traveled as a group from South Carolina so that one of them could have a tummy tuck performed by a Matamoros doctor, a relative said Monday.
Shortly after reaching Mexico, they were caught between two rival drug cartel groups.
Video showed the group being loaded into the back of a van by armed men.
Officials said a Mexican woman was killed in the crossfire.
Matamoros is located just south of Brownsville, Texas.
The kidnapping illustrates the lingering terror in the city, which is dominated by factions of the powerful Gulf Drug Cartel, who often fight amongst themselves.
Thousands of Mexicans have disappeared in the state of Tamaulipas alone amid the violence.
