Pawar supports Neiphiu, says he does not support the BJP
NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said support for the Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland, saying there had been an “understanding” with Rio ahead of the polls.
NCP has seven legislators in the Nagaland House of 60, while the combined strength of NDPP-BJP is 37 (NDP and BJP 12). NDPP and BJP had a pre-poll alliance.
“We had an understanding with Rio before the polls. There was a protracted discussion about whether to bring the NCP into the government or into the opposition. In the greatest interest of Nagaland, the NCP has decided to support Rio.” Pawar said. NCP spokesman Narendra Verma said the party’s newly elected lawmakers believe that the NCP should be part of government in the wider interest of the state and that it was up to Pawar to make the final decision.
Pawar, however, clarified that NCP’s support for Rio should not be misinterpreted as its support for BJP. “This is wrong. We joined Rio and not the BJP,” Pawar told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai. In 2014 Maharashtra assembly polls, the BJP had emerged as the largest party, but lacked a clear majority to form a government on its own. NCP had then declared external support, following which BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis was appointed CM.
Pawar said PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah made allegations of corruption against Meghalaya politicians during their election campaign. “But after the results were declared, not only did the BJP join such politicians to form the government, Modi also attended the swearing-in ceremony of the CM [Conrad Sangma].”
