Ravichandran Ashwin scripts history, becomes India’s leading wicket-taker in Border-Gavaskar Trophy | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made history on Friday by becoming India’s highest wicket taker in the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Ashwin achieved the feat in India’s fourth and final Test against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Ashwin has now taken 113 wickets at an average of 28.10 and a save rate of 2.71 in 22 matches. His best bowling numbers in an inning are 7/103.

Ashwin, left with a spell of 6/91, once again showed his magic on a pitch that offered little help to the spinners in Australia’s opening innings.
He took the precious scalps of Travis Head (32), Cameron Green (114), Alex Carey (0), Mitchell Starc (6), Nathan Lyons (34) and Todd Murphy (41).

Lyon are the highest wicket-taker in the history of the series, with 113 wickets. But he is in second position since it took 26 games to reach this number. His average is 31.92 and his savings rate is 3.09. His best bowling numbers against India in Tests are 8/50.
Ashvin and Lyons are followed by Indian spin legends Anil Kumble (111) and Harbhajan Singh (95). Ravindra Jadeja is the fifth wicket taker in BGT history, with 85 wickets.
The highest ranked test runner Ashvin also netted his 32nd five-wicket run in Test cricket with the dismissal of Todd Murphy in the after-tea session on day two.

In the process, Ashwin surpassed legendary Anil Kumble’s record of 25 five-wicket runs at home. The spinner off then claimed his sixth wicket in the form of Nathan Lyon as Australia played for a whopping 480 in their first inning.
It was also Ashwin’s 26th five-wicket shot in India, the most by any bowler in India. Overall, he has a total of 32 five-wicket runs, which is the fifth highest in the history of Test cricket.
Most five-wicket test rides done by Sri Lankan spin assistant Mutthiah Muralitharanwhich has a total of 67 five-wicket runs in the longer format.
Ashwin is also the highest wicket taker in the current edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He has taken a total of 24 wickets so far with best figures of 6/91.
