USGS: Magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands: USGS

NEW DELHI: A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region, located north of New ZealandThursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) announced.
The earthquake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) the USGS added. A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, the United States Tsunami warning system said. “Dangerous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 300 kilometers of the epicenter,” the agency said in a separate statement.
There is no tsunami threat for Australiathe country’s Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet.
