NEW DELHI: Separatist leader and self-styled preacher Amritpal Singh, who leads Waris Punjab De (WPD), is still on the run. Punjab Police, who launched a massive manhunt to capture Amritpal, arrested 78 Waris Punjab De members.
The elusive preacher himself slipped at police on Saturday and escaped their dragnet when his ride was intercepted in Jalandhar district. The authorities have tightened security in several places.

4 Waris Punjab De Members Flew To Dibrugarh After Arrested In Punjab

Four members of a group led by Amritpal Singh were brought in from Assam Dibrugarh Sunday, police said. They were flown on a special flight, they said. “The four are currently being held in Dibrugarh Central Jail,” a police officer said, without elaborating further.

Internet, SMS services suspended in Punjab

SMS and mobile internet services have been suspended in the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab until noon on 20 March. “All mobile internet services, all SMS services (except mobile banking and recharge) and all dongle services provided over mobile networks, except voice calling, in the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab are suspended until 20th March (12.00 noon ) in the interest of public security,” the Punjab government’s Department of Home Affairs and Justice said on Sunday.

Vehicle used by Amritpal Singh, ammunition seized

The vehicle used by ‘Waris Punjab De’ Chief Amritpal Singh for his escape was seized by Punjab Police on Sunday, along with several other vehicles and ammunition. Police said seven aides of Amritpal Singh were arrested.

“A car used in Amritpal Singh’s convoy was impounded. A Kirpan and a .315 caliber weapon with 57 loaded cartridges were also recovered from it. The car was abandoned after use,” he said.
He also said those rumors they spread will be dealt with strictly.
“The law and order situation is normal in Jalandhar and the state. The police are committed to public safety. We will take tough measures against those who take over law and order. Those who will be found spreading rumors they will be treated strictly,” the SSP added.

Amritpal Singh’s “close associate and financier” arrested

An alleged adviser and financier of the “fugitive” has been arrested, the ANI news agency reported, citing sources.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, the Jalandhar Commissioner said, “Waris Punjab De’ boss Amritpal Singh has been declared a fugitive. His two cars were impounded and gunmen were arrested. We also checked whether firearms from his safety stock had been procured lawfully. A case has been registered. The Punjab Police has launched a manhunt for Amritpal Singh and we hope he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and Further searches and raids are underway.”
