Social media, TV hosts mock controversy over curvaceous mermaid statue: ‘What’s the matter?’

Social media users have weighed in on the controversy over a voluptuous mermaid statue in southern Italy, and most critics dispute the fact that the mermaid has both a human backside and a fish tail.

“The debate aroused by the Siren is welcome, as long as it concerns topics such as freedom of artistic expression or the remains of an ancient and timeless way of looking at the female (or male) body”, Adolfo told Fox News Digital in a statement Marciano, principal of the IISS Luigi Russo art school who made the now famous statue.

The school created the statue as a way to honor Rita Levi-Montalcini, the late Italian senator and Nobel laureate, according to the Monopoli Times, which first covered the story.

Tiziana Schiavarelli, actress, said residents are right to express “some misgivings” about the statue.

“She looks like a mermaid with two silicone breasts and most importantly a huge a– never seen before on a mermaid. At least I don’t know,” Schiavarelli said, according to The Guardian.

Whoopi Goldberg chimed in during a segment of ‘The View’, saying ‘she got some loot’ and ridiculing people for making such a big deal about something that ‘isn’t real’.

Adolfo Marciano, dean of the Luigi Rosso art school, has suggested that the statue should spark a healthy debate about standards of beauty. (Monopoly Time)

“I don’t think kids are thinking, ‘Ooh, that’s sexy,'” Goldberg said before the hosts delved into a discussion about how a mermaid can have both a backside and a fishtail.

Another anchor expressed surprise at the controversy unfolding in Italy, which has “so much naked art everywhere”.

An image of the statue made a splash on social media, with most users focusing on whether the controversy surrounded an imaginary creature.

One social media user, posting a screenshot of The Guardian’s report, said the statue was “a disgrace” because “mermaids famously don’t have human butts, the tail reaches down to the hips”.

Another user scoffed at the controversy, saying, “Right. Sure! Mermaids are real and we know what they’re supposed to look like.”

Since late April, area residents and the larger Italian population have debated whether the curvaceous mermaid statue is an appropriate art display given its proximity to the piazza’s park.

Another busty mermaid statue, this one on Cape Cod, raised similar eyebrows and complaints in 2016.
