WHO declares the end of the mpox public health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that mpox was no longer a global health emergency, ending a nearly year-long scare over the viral disease that has led to confirmed cases in more than 100 countries.
The organization declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in July 2022 and supported its stance in November and February.
The WHO tag is designed to trigger a coordinated international response and unlock funding to collaborate in sharing vaccines and treatments.
More than 87,000 cases of mpox have been confirmed globally from the start of 2022 through May 8 this year, according to the latest WHO report.
While WHO noted a steady decline in the number of reported cases earlier this year, it also expressed concern about a possible upsurge in some regions and persistent transmission in some countries.
