Jonny Lee Miller could trade stomping boards for scaling burning buildings after qualifying as a volunteer firefighter.
The stage and film actor, best known for his iconic role as Sick Boy in the film Trainspotting, has announced that he is officially qualified as a firefighter after spending five months in training at New York’s Suffolk County Fire Academy.
Miller, 50, revealed his news to his 234,000 Instagram followers on Monday, sharing a photo of himself among his peers.
He thanked all the instructors, singled out the Sicilian boss who “took great care” of the class and “never got mad at us”.
“I look forward to serving the community I love in Fire Island NY,” she wrote.
Miller — who recently played former prime minister John Major on season five of The Crown — hinted at making a change last December when he posted a photo from a book called “7 Essentials of Firefighting,” along with the caption: ” The textbooks have arrived!”
The British actor also shared a photo of his fire kit in January, captioning “School Tomorrow #50yearoldvirgin” and another photo of his fire gear “on the rack before class drills” in April.
The Academy, which describes itself as “where Suffolk County’s bravest train,” trains volunteer firefighters, career firefighters, and first responders.
The Firefighter I course pursued by Miller is described as an “initial entry program for firefighters, introducing concepts, practices and techniques necessary for success within the firefighters”.
Interns must also complete five practical performance sessions covering emergencies, tools, search, casualty and firefighter removal, ladders, hose handling, fire behavior, and firefighter vehicles.
At the end of the course there is a practical exam and a written test.
