PM Modi and his British counterpart Sunak review bilateral strategic relations

HIROSHIMA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had fruitful talks with his British counterpart on Sunday Rishi Sunak during which they reviewed the bilateral strategic partnership, including progress in India and the UK ALE negotiations.
The two leaders also agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas such as trade and investment and science and technology.
Modi and Sunak met on the sidelines of the G7 advanced economies summit here in Hiroshima.
“A boost for – a comprehensive strategic partnership. Prime Minister @narendramodi had productive talks with UK Prime Minister @RishiSunak in Hiroshima. The two leaders reviewed their strategic partnership, including making the update on the progress of FTA negotiations between India and the UK,” the Foreign Office said. Foreign Affairs (MEA) tweeted.
The leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in a wide range of areas, such as trade and investment, science and technology, higher education and people-to-people relations, he said.
India and the UK have been negotiating an FTA since January last year, aiming to strike a comprehensive pact that is expected to significantly improve bilateral trade relations worth an estimated £34 billion in 2022.
Last month, the two nations concluded the ninth round of India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with detailed discussions on a range of policy areas.
Recently, Britain’s chief FTA negotiator – Harjinder Kang – has been appointed as the country’s new Trade Commissioner for South Asia and Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, based in Mumbai.
According to official UK government statistics, India was the UK’s 12th largest trading partner in the four quarters to the end of the third quarter of 2022, accounting for 2.1% of total UK trade.
The two leaders shared a tight embrace before their talks.
Modi arrived in Hiroshima on Friday to attend three sessions of the G7 summit following an invitation from his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida.
