NEW DELHI: Star Indian shuttles PV Sindhu And Kidambi Srikanth recorded contrasting victories in their respective first-round encounters, securing their place in the pre-quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur.
Sixth-seeded Sindhu faced a tough battle against the Danes Line Christophersonultimately triumphing in a grueling one hour and two minute encounter.
The two-time Olympic medalist prevailed with a 21-13, 17-21, 21-18 victory, maintaining her dominance over the 33rd-ranked Dane, whom she had beaten four times previously.
Sindhu, currently ranked 13th in the world, will now face Japan Aya Ohori in the next round.
By contrast, it was a disappointing day for Indian qualifiers Ashmita Chaliha and Aakarshi Kashyap in the ladies’ singles competition. Both players suffered back-to-back defeats, ending their campaigns in the first round.
Ashmita lost 17-21, 7-21 to the fourth seed Yue Han of China, while Aakarshi was beaten by the highest ranked Japanese player Akane Yamaguchi with a score of 17-21, 12-21.
In the men’s singles event, Kidambi Srikanth showed his skills and emerged victorious, beating Toma Junior Popov with a score of 21-12, 21-16.
Srikanth now moves on to the second round where he will face eighth seeded Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
