CHENNAI: Apple supplier and Taiwanese electronics major Pegatron halted production at its facility at Mahindra World City in Chengalpet on the outskirts of Chennai due to a fire incident on Sunday night.
The fire broke out in the late hours of Sunday night due to a short circuit, fire and rescue services officials said. Sources told TOI that smoke could be seen engulfing the region.
No casualties were reported by authorities as the factory was closed then. “It is nothing major; damage is being assessed,” a person told TOI.
However, production did not commence on Monday at the time of writing.
“At the company’s factory in Chennai, India, on the evening of the 24th local time, there was a spark incident, which is currently under control. There are no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets. The cause of accident is currently under investigations by relevant authority, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation,” a statement from Pegatron said.
The second largest Apple products maker, Taiwan’s Pegatron, commenced production in Mahindra World City complex in 2022 after signing a MoU with the Tamil Nadu government. The company then said that it has invested around Rs 1,100 crore and the facility offers employment to more than 14,000 people.
Apple has in recent years taken a big bet on India and begun assembly of iPhones in the country via its contract manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron. Owing to its smartphone manufacturing ecosystem, Tamil Nadu is now the top exporter of electronic goods in India, with exports nearly tripling in the 2022-2023 financial year to $5.37 billion.
This is the second such instance of a production disruption at an Apple supplier in Tamil Nadu after a mass food poisoning incident in 2021. A Foxconn’s iPhone factory in India then found itself at the centre of a food-poisoning incident that led to production disruption of more than a week.
